Next exchange holidays
Holiday dates are taken from the exchange calendar as reported by official notices and the press; check the official JSE announcement before trading.
The exchange runs a structured day that begins before orders match and ends with a single calculated print. This page describes that rhythm in words, since the schedule is fixed and does not shift with the seasons.
Sessions across the day
Trading opens with a pre-open phase. Orders may be entered, amended or withdrawn, but nothing trades; the book builds until the opening match. The main session follows, where continuous matching applies and most turnover occurs. The day concludes with a closing auction, which gathers residual interest into one closing price used for valuation and index calculation.
Days, time zone and public holidays
- The market operates Monday through Friday.
- All references use South African standard time, the zone the exchange itself publishes in.
- Public holidays suspend trading for the whole day. When a public holiday falls on a working day, the exchange stays closed and no session runs; the calendar simply skips it.
Reading the status line
The status line on this index-led page reflects the phase in progress, drawn from public exchange data. It distinguishes pre-open, open, auction and closed states, so a glance tells you whether the all-share index is live or the book is quiet. Use the code lookup alongside it to move from the index to an individual listing.
